Ada Lovelace Day 2025
On October 14th, members of the department of computer science celebrated the Ada Lovelace Day – an international day honouring the pioneer of computer science, Ada Lovelace. Starting from 5 p.m. students and scientific staff members gathered in memory of Ada, solved puzzles, shared ideas, and enjoyed some pizza together.
Despite the ongoing exam period, the event was well attended, showing the community’s enthusiasm and admiration for Ada’s legacy. In several groups, we played “Ada Lovelace: The analytical machine”.
The highlight of the evening was the Ada Lovelace puzzle combining fun, logical challenges guided within a storytelling of Ada and Mister X. Participants eagerly collaborated and discussed Ada’s remarkable role in shaping modern computing.
Thanks to the financial support for this Kiel ACM-W Chapter Event from the ACM-W Europe, we were able to financially support everyone with the pizza, everyone could relax and enjoy the evening. The atmosphere was lively, inspiring, and full of curiosity – true to the spirit of Ada Lovelace, who was the first to imagine computers as creative machines, not just calculators.
A big thank you to the ACM-W Europe without whose support this event would not have been possible.
Many thanks to everyone who joined and see you next year!

On Ada Lovelace Day 2024, October 8, around 20 students and staff members gathered at Kiel University to celebrate the legacy of one of the first female programmers in history and learn more about her background. Despite the exam period, many interested individuals attended the evening event, which was dedicated to honoring Ada Lovelace and her contributions to computer science. A special highlight of the evening was the screening of the BBC documentary Calculating Ada: The Countess of Computing, which illuminated the life and achievements of Ada Lovelace. The documentary provided participants with exciting insights into Ada’s vision of machines that go far beyond mere calculation, inspiring discussions about their relevance to modern computer science, as well as the teaching in computer science foundations and skills such as pattern recognition, and their education within the program. Participants were also well taken care of in terms of food: they enjoyed pizza and Asian cuisine. Thanks to the generous support from ACM-W (Association for Computing Machinery – Women in Computing), the food was provided free of charge for all students, contributing to a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. A special surprise was the homemade Ada Lovelace Day cupcakes brought to the event by a colleague. The event not only offered an opportunity for knowledge exchange but also for networking in a relaxed and collegial environment. Overall, Ada Lovelace Day 2024 at CAU Kiel was a successful event that raised awareness of the role of women in computer science while also serving as a platform for discussion and exchange. A big thank you to all the attendees of Ada Lovelace Day at CAU! We look forward to celebrating this day together again next year.
